Indian health officials are working to contain an outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus that was recorded in West Bengal, a situation that has been confirmed by the Thai government and India’s National Center for Disease Control.

There are two cases that have been reported, involving two nurses at a private hospital near Kolkata, West Bengal, The Telegraph and The Independent reported.

So far, 180 people have been tested and 20 individuals have been asked to quarantine, both reports continued.

One patient is reported to be in critical condition, Narayan Swaroop Nigam, principal secretary of the health and family welfare department in West Bengal, told The Telegraph.

Officials noted the outbreak is “not major.” However, it has still prompted high-priority responses from officials.

What is it?
The Nipah virus is a bat-borne zoonotic virus originating from the Fruit bat (genus Pteropus).

Where did it come from?
It was originally discovered in Malaysia and Singapore (1999) during the small outbreak it was discovered that the virus was transmissable from swine to human. There were also aditional cases of this virus in Bangladesh, the Philipines and even in India but at the time it wasn't of anything noteworthy. Later on inside a hopistal in West Bengal Kolkata India (present day), 5 people were confirmed to be infected with the disease, the infection managed to spread to hospistal staff and currently there's 100 reported cases of the disease.

How can I not be infected?
The disease can be passed on from bat to swine, infected pigs are not to be touched or handled without any sort of protection. Drinking juice from fruit contaminated with the urine/saliva of the Fruit bat (genus Pteropus) will put you at risk of infection. The virus mainly spreads through human-to-human transmission. Coming into contact with a person's secretion and excretions is not advised as you will be infected.
