I remember being a little kid and watching anime on YouTube, and this shit was inescapable. I personally watched the anime and read the first volume of the LN and thought it good, but wasn't anything special. But I remember for a good 3 or so years Haruhi was practically the face of anime worldwide, and then it just disappeared. What happened to it? Why did its popularity fizzle out so quickly?

Someday in the rain is so good in comparison to the other SOL episodes because it doesnt follow the typical SOL filler format of the series. The typical format is Haruhi doing some stupid shit to Mikuru while Kyon argues with her, Yuki does nothing and Koizumi makes a funny comment. Someday in the rain doesnt have any supernatural elements but it actually furthers their characters by just showing us their usual day-to-day interaction. It shows us how despite his complaints, Kyon highly values his relationship with everyone in the SOS Brigade, especially with Haruhi. Its also the first hint (outside of Endless Eight) we get about Yuki's feelings about Kyon and her actions during the movie.
