I've liked the few shmups I've played (normalfag slop like Ikaruga, Radiant silver Gun, etc.). But I'd like to delve deeper into the genre. Where should I start?

can't go wrong with any of the CAVE shmups

og Dodonpachi is a great classic shooter, though that also means it's not very forgiving
my personal favourite is Espgaluda, it's mechanics make survival play forgiving and it's very fun
I heard a lot of praise for Mushihimesama, but I've never got around playing it
if you want to get your balls crushed, play Ketsui. it has a great OST tho

for non-CAVE games, Battle Garegga is another great classic shmup, though I'd say it's harder than Dodonpachi
My personal favorite non-CAVE game is Castle Shikigami, characters have great variety of shot types and abilities and the OST is great
