>>109366> "most lain fans know about haibane"vs
> "most people who know about haibane only know it through lain"There's a difference between those two, sure, but it's irrelevant because both are wrong. And while there's a difference, both are also very related to each other: IF it was correct that "most Haibane-aware people know it via Lain" then that would necessitate a greater number of Lain-fans being aware of Haibane than is the case – very few Lain-fans know about Haibane, and that very small number of "Lain-fans who know about Haibane" is simply far too small a number to make up the Haibane fanbase. In other words, if "most Haibane-fans only know about Haibane via Lain" was correct then the Haibane fanbase would be much smaller than it is.
<number spaceThink of it in terms of just numbers: Just to illustrate the point, lets say there are 15000 Lain fans and of those only 300 know about Haibane, yet Haibane has has 2500 fans total – so the number of "Lain-fans knowing about Haibane" is too low to make up for even half of the Haibane-fans. Hence the idea "most Haibane-fans found it via Lain" is impossible. For that to be possible, many many many more Lain-fans would need to be Haibane-aware.
<haibane spaceOf all the people — not just here, but especially so here now due to those 2 threads mentioned earlier, but globally — who've seen Haibane, the majority of them didn't make the decision to watch it because they'd seen Lain (in other words "found" it via Lain) but rather because they'd either A: encountered Haibane on its own (and not having seen Lain) or B: read about Haibane via posts/comments online recommending it, or some friends told them to check it out.
<renmei spaceOf course (for the sake of acknowledging all possible scenarios) in a few cases some "B" people have actually seen Lain but didn't know about Haibane; didn't "find out" about it via Lain, but then later they saw/heard someone recommend Haibane and that recommendation didn't mention Lain but rather just recommended Haibane by itself – so then when they checked Haibane out, only THEN in that moment did they see the similar art and discover the connection. And likewise in a few cases some "A" people have seen Lain, but still encountered Haibane separately by itself (while looking for anime, as opposed to being recommended Haibane) and not via reading about Yoshitoshi Abe.
<final spaceBut anyway, put simply, the majority of Haibane-fans didn't find it due to Lain. And saying the majority did is illogical and nonsensical as there aren't and were never enough Haibane-aware Lain-fans to make up for even half the number of Haibane-fans.
