>wtf does it have to do with azumanga

OP, who hasn't even seen Azumanga, just thinks "this is slice of life and about some girls so that must be why people like Azumanga"
That's a somewhat natural assumption to make, but it's an extremely superficial observation and also wrong.

Disregarding OP and such ultra-superficial similarities, there's a very special reason why so many people think of Azumanga when seeing Haibane and often bring the two up together. Most of the time, however, people aren't consciously aware of why they have the two animes together in their minds. When seeing Haibane, after having seen Azumanga, people automatically in a passive way sense and notice things. In the way how all sounds and sights one experiences enters the brain whether one consciously think about them or not, and then later one might start thinking about something one heard or saw.

OP doesn't know this of course and neither do most Azumanga fans nor most who are fans of both, but Haibane Renmei is - partially, in a very specific and limited way - a sequel to Azumanga. That takes several watchthroughs of both animes to understand, and it's a rather strange and unique situation. It's not a sequel in the ordinary sense at all. Nor is it a "spiritual sequel" - Haibane is very different. Nor is it officially labelled as a sequel of any sort; the two animes are not officially related at all. But when you've seen Azumanga maaany times and you've thus (hopefully) achieved a more indepth understanding of it…

(for those very new to Azumanga or haven't seen it; be aware there's much more to Azumanga than there appears to be at first; if you've only seen Azumanga a few times then it's exceptionally unlikely that you truly fully understand everything that there is to understand within it, but that doesn't mean you're stupid - many who've seen Azumanga lots of times still only understand it in a superficial way, and the fuller understanding has always been held by a minority of fans who - thanks to their fuller understanding - have a greater appreciation for how the characters are written - - we've got to keep in mind the majority of the fanbase has such a poor understanding that it's commonplace for fans to think things like "Osaka is an Osakan from Osaka" and "Osaka behaves like a stereotypical Osakan" and so forth; completely upsidedown and backwards things like that - demonstrating the person hasn't paid any attention whatsoever to even the very most basic things within Azumanga, causing him to miss and misunderstand even the most fundamental aspects of the story and characters)

…and you then watch Haibane again, you will (or might) then notice Haibane is a continuation (in a very unusual way!) of a specific element of the Azumanga plot and that Haibane partially (note "partially" - lots of stuff in Haibane has zero to do with Azumanga) is about one of the Azumanga characters - or really two, but primarily one; the other character, while immensely important in both animes, is in Haibane basically only talked about and referenced. The author of Haibane, Yoshitoshi Abe, was friends to some degree with Kiyohiko Azuma and they were fans of each others work (as in when SEL and the Azumanga Daioh manga was new and around when the anime and Haibane were being planned and made). Pre-Haibane what Abe was most famous for was Serial Experiments Lain; he designed the SEL characters. And related to that and the aforementioned, here's a drawing of Lain by Azuma! Anyway, Abe based some of his ideas for Haibane directly on Azumanga. Not as in he copied ideas from Azumanga or was inspired by Azumanga but rather he wrote some aspects of the Haibane story as a continuation of a certain plot element within Azumanga. That Abe based some his ideas for Haibane directly on Azumanga is self-evident already in a superficial way when watching Haibane the first time (but it gets even more obvious the more times one watches it, when one spots all the non-superficial things) with how Haibane has a version of Tomo and Sakaki and has a Glasses Girl. That's what people tend to notice first. And those characters look like that for a reason. They're not the same individuals as Tomo and Sakaki and Yomi, but neither is it a mere visual design inspiration. They look like they do for a story reason. More specifically, they look like they do for Rakka's sake; to make her subconsciously (she can't remember) feel at home - she was placed in ("born" into) the Haibane world at the specific time that she was, and put together with those girls, to make her feel at home and feel loved.

WARNING: The video is a major spoiler for Haibane Renmei. Don't watch it if you haven't seen that episode (8) already.

If you've seen both animes more than a few times (especially Azumanga, as Haibane is significantly easier to fully understand in comparison; Haibane is much more straightforward and explicit in its storytelling; more in-your-face), then a huge hint for something that can help you realize Haibane is a sequel is for you to focus particular attention on the moment when Rakka falls off the ladder and the dream she has there before regaining consciousness and that she says "Sou da… ano toki…" ("Right… it was back then…") and the related visuals (some of the visuals and animation details there are incredibly important) and all the things throughout the anime tied to that scene (most importantly the surrounding scenes preceding and following that scene).

This strange situation with how it's a "sequel" in a most unusual way, and all the intricate details within Haibane that tie together with a multitude of very specific details within Azumanga, is something that's much more fun to realize by oneself rather than having it all explained. It's extremely rewarding with regards to one's appreciation of both animes; when one gets it all, one gains a new and greater appreciation for both Haibane and Azumanga. Aside from all that, a fun curiosity of sorts to mention with regards to Haibane being a sequel: go on anidb and check the air date of the last episode of Azumanga and the air date of the first episode of Haibane - at about the same time as Azumanga's episode 27 would've aired if it had one, Haibane Renmei began.

Note that I will not post in this thread again. I've said all I intended, and will not answer any questions. Go watch the animes (and think things through) instead of seeking answers about them online. It's much more rewarding that way.

Haibane isn't even remotely as SoL as Azumanga is. The two are indeed extremely different.

Interesting anti-marge margerald. I should watch the angel show looks interesting. If zumanga didn't have its humor I really wouldn't like it as much. When SoL is too serious/emotional it's unwatchable.

Just finished it and it's one of the best things I've watched. The soundtrack, art style, atmosphere, etc. are absolute kino.

I even cried at the last few episodes like a bitch but that's going to the grave with me.

Abe and Azuma are indeed friends or at least were for a long time - they were at least still friends about 10 years ago as evident by them conversing on twatter (talking mostly about photography and cameras).

One of those titles that absolutely shouldn't be judged by its cover, with the cover in this case being the teenage girls it's centered on. It's not a cutesy-girls anime and none of them are intended to be even remotely sexy and there's no fanservice nonsense. These women could just as well have been in their late 20s and the anime would've been essentially the same.

Surely you meant to post in this thread https://soyjak.st/a/thread/100805.html and mixed the threads up somehow. Haibane Renmei isn't SEL. There might be a few trannies who've found out about Haibane via having seen SEL first then reading about Yoshitoshi Abe and finding Haibane that way, but SEL is the anime that "attracts so many fucking troons" - not Haibane.
