You see, the thing about Irvin Welsh and his little Trainspotting circus is that people think it’s all about chaos, right? They think sticking your arm in a filthy toilet or shooting up heroin in a dreary Edinburgh flat makes you some kind of grand agent of anarchy.

Let me tell you something about real madness, chuds. Real madness doesn't need a glossary in the back of the book to explain what a "bampot" is because the prose is too lazy to do it natively. Welsh writes trauma porn for middle-class university students who want to feel edgy while sipping their oat milk lattes. It’s boring! It’s repetitive! Every single character is just a variation of a guy named "Spud" who yells about football, punches a wall, and cries into a pint of Tennent's lager.

Where’s the punchline? Where’s the theatricality?

You want a society? Rent Boy-society is just waking up at 2 PM to look for a dealer while complaining about the Thatcher administration like it's still 1984. At least my boys know how to put on a smile and paint their faces. Welsh's characters live in absolute squalor, but they don't even have the decency to laugh about it. They just wallow.
