Why did courtesans all but cease to exist nowadays? Regular prostitutes are still common, but even searching "courtesan" online will yield historical articles. I suppose it may have something to do with dumbing down the masses, because in the past sexual services could at least be accompanied with intelligent activity, whereas now it's just sex. Also could have something to do with industrialization (ev&oe there still were some courtesans in the 20th century)
