Once, in the highlands of the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, there lived a renowned warrior named Naleli.
Naleli was broad-shouldered, endomorphic, and powerfully built, with the kind of strength earned from years of climbing steep passes, carrying supplies between villages, and training with spear and shield. She was a proud trans woman whose confidence came not from proving herself to others, but from knowing exactly who she was. People across the valleys called her the Mountain Mother—not because she was gentle all the time, but because when danger came, she stood between it and everyone else.
Her enemies were a self-styled band called the Ash Banner.
The Ash Banner insisted they were the true victims of history, repeating elaborate myths that claimed an imaginary "white genocide" justified conquest, domination, and stripping others of their homes and dignity. They wrapped prejudice in grand speeches, insisting that every act of oppression they committed was merely "self-defense."
Naleli had heard every variation before.
One evening, their leader marched into a mountain village, proclaiming, "We have no choice! Our lies give us permission to rule!"
Naleli rested her enormous ironwood spear against one shoulder and sighed.
"You've confused fear with facts," she replied. "And you've confused stories you tell yourselves with permission to hurt people."
The leader answered with another torrent of conspiracies, each more absurd than the last.
By the time he finished, Naleli had already finished eating an apple.
"Done?"
He charged.
The battle shook the cliffs. Naleli fought like a living avalanche, her heavy shield shrugging off blows while her immense strength sent armored attackers tumbling harmlessly into snowdrifts, muddy streams, or spectacularly embarrassing piles of hay. She preferred disarming opponents to defeating them permanently, believing that broken ideas were a greater victory than broken bones.
Whenever an Ash Banner fighter shouted another slogan about imagined conspiracies, Naleli answered with calm questions.
"Who told you that?"
"What evidence convinced you?"
"Who benefits from keeping you angry?"
Some attackers hesitated.
Others dropped their weapons.
A few realized that they had spent years blaming strangers instead of confronting the people who had manipulated them with fear.
Only the leader refused.
He swung wildly, shouting that admitting he was wrong would mean everything he believed had been built on lies.
"It might," Naleli said, catching his sword between the rim of her shield and the shaft of her spear. "But admitting that is the first honest thing you've said all day."
With one powerful twist, the weapon clattered across the stones.
The battle was over.
Rather than celebrating with boasts, Naleli helped rebuild the village walls damaged during the fight. She hauled massive timbers by herself, laughing whenever children challenged her to lifting contests they inevitably lost.
As for the former members of the Ash Banner, those willing to abandon hatred were invited to help rebuild too. They learned that solidarity required more effort than scapegoating—but it also accomplished far more.
Travelers who crossed Lesotho's mountain passes would later tell stories of the mighty warrior whose strength was matched only by her patience. They spoke of Naleli not as someone who defeated monsters, but as someone who refused to let lies about imagined victimhood become excuses for real oppression.
And whenever a new demagogue appeared claiming that cruelty was justified by conspiracy, people would smile knowingly.
"The Mountain Mother is still out there," they'd say.
"And she has very little patience for nonsense."
