The ultimate reason you pray to him isn't because he loves you, because he answers your prayers or anything of the sort, the reason is because of the punishment of not believing in him. The belief that he's real and his punishment is very real is what drives people to pray to their god and adhere to his rules.
This is something a lot of atheists seem to not understand. I unfortunately went to a school filled with muslims and even they have the same thing. I remember in our religious education class we was learning about the afterlife and the teacher decided to speak about muslims because of how many was in my class. She asked and almost all of them said that they have had nightmares over the punishment for not following the religion and that they are scared not to, that even if they didn't believe in the rest, the punishment keeps them in line.
It's an awful argument because it doesn't address the belief in him existing, it simply implies that whatever hell you are imagining, is worth being subjected to over the heavenly aspect because the god isn't "good." It's a completely flawed argument built upon atheistic misunderstanding of religion and in particular, Abrahamic religions.
