Depends, what do you define as old school? the 80s? 90s? 2000s?
A lot of older furries had them be in sci-fi and fantasy settings because back then genre distinction was less of a thing and so were furries so they needed to have a 'lore' reason to be animals. in the 2000s furries online had to have a backstory, likes and dislikes on their sheet. Nowadays furries are very basic and bland, but they also seem less bestial and boomerish.
