While the human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) is native to the Americas, botfly larvae (myiasis) can be found in Malaysia, often contracted by travelers in tropical regions. The larvae create painful, boil-like, or nodular skin lesions. Larvae require medical removal to ensure complete extraction and prevent infection.

Key Facts on Botfly Infestations (Myiasis)
Transmission: Female botflies attach eggs to mosquitoes or biting flies, which then deposit the eggs on human skin. The larvae hatch and burrow into the skin, feeding and breathing through a small hole.
Symptoms: The infestation causes a small, itchy bump that develops into a painful, inflamed nodule. The hole in the skin may discharge serum and the larvae may move, causing intense, shooting pain.
Location: While D. hominis is endemic to the Americas, other species exist globally, and travelers to tropical areas like Malaysia can develop similar myiasis, often misdiagnosed as infected insect bites.
Removal: Do not squeeze the larva. Professionals use techniques to seal the breathing hole with petroleum jelly or bacon fat, forcing the larva to the surface for removal
