Good. Your great grandfather deserves it for defending Jews in the brother wars.

I'm so sorry you and your family are going through this. Caring for someone in the late stages of dementia is incredibly hard, and the layer of trauma from his wartime experiences makes it even more heartbreaking. Here are some practical suggestions:
Managing His Fear and Agitation
Enter his reality, don't correct it. Trying to convince him he's not in a POW camp will only increase his distress. Instead, use gentle, calming language that meets him where he is — "You're safe now," "The war is over, you made it home," "No one will hurt you here."
Identify triggers. Certain things may set him off — loud noises, being touched unexpectedly, being restrained during care, uniforms, or even certain foods or smells. Keep a log so you can anticipate and minimize them.
Approach slowly and calmly. Always announce yourself before touching him, come into his line of sight from the front, speak softly and use his name. Sudden movements can feel like an attack to someone reliving combat trauma.
Use a familiar, trusted voice. If one family member triggers less fear than others, that person may be best suited for hands-on care during agitated episodes.
Managing Violent Episodes Safely
Don't restrain him physically unless there's immediate danger — it almost always escalates the situation.
Give him space to de-escalate. Back away, lower your voice, reduce stimulation (turn off TVs, dim lights).
Have a safety plan — know when to step back and call for professional help.
Protect yourself. It's okay and important to physically remove yourself from a situation where you could be hurt. His violence is the disease, not him.
Medical Support
This is the most important step: talk to his doctor about behavioral symptoms. There are medications that can significantly reduce agitation, paranoia, and combativeness in late-stage dementia — this doesn't need to be something your family endures without medical intervention.
Also ask about a referral to a geriatric psychiatrist or a palliative care team, who specialize in exactly this kind of end-of-life comfort care.
Consider Professional or Hospice Care
At the late stage, hospice care is often appropriate and available, even for dementia. Hospice teams are trained in managing agitation, pain, and fear at end of life and can come to wherever he lives. They can be a tremendous relief for the family. Ask his doctor if he qualifies.
If in-home care is no longer safe, a memory care facility with staff trained in dementia and trauma-informed care may be the most compassionate option — for him and for your family.
For You and Your Family
Please don't neglect yourselves in this. What you're witnessing — someone you love living in terror — is traumatic. Consider:
Connecting with a caregiver support group (the Alzheimer's Association has free ones)
Talking to a counselor, even briefly
Leaning on each other and taking shifts so no one person carries this alone
You are doing something profoundly loving by trying to care for him well in these final days. I hope you find some relief and support soon.

My great grandfather died 2 months ago and he was a photographer, he had taken a large amount of photos from his youth that he loved to show me before he died. If you have access to anything like that of your grandfather, seeing those photos may make him less focused on being tortured by the allies in tunisia and libya
