Cats will try to comfort you if you're feeling sad or attempt to protect you if they think you're being attacked in their minds just like dogs. Same think happened with those chickens. I've watched this happen with people and their children who aren't the almighty "food source" you think is the be-all-end-all for these animals. I don't make these conclusions from pets I'm attached to. Personally I think it's an annoying time consuming burden to take care of useless creature with child-like intelligence at best unless it can have an actual practical use like a hunting dog. I've come to these conclusions from seeing how pets behave around friends, family members, and loved ones.

You can eat animals who had a happy life. Look for expensive high quality meat from trustworthy farmers rather than factory farms or wild meat.
