I got btfo'd yesterday for saying a diesel train ran on steam, that was my mistake and now im going to explain to /soy/ exactly how these trains work to make up for it.

A diesel train basically gets electricity from explosions diesel engine. The engine creates those explosions by compressing air in the combustion chamber which raises the air temperature, diesel fuel is then injected into that air causing it to ignite, which creates power (mechanical energy). This energy is then sent into an alternator which is basically a large rotor, as the engine drives that rotor, it creates an alternating current (AC).

are you retarded? why would you think a diesel trian ran on anything else than diesel

nusoicacas don't know diesel engines…

I thought it was the same way certain nuclear reactors work where the fuel would generate steam, that steam then being where the energy comes from.

well i mean there's diesel-electric hybrids OP could've confused it for them

>mfw engines are powered by enslaved explosions converted into rotational motion

hey you engineerlets, something cool for you. Check what the steam logo is

why would you convert the mechanical energy to electricity and then convert it back to mechanical energy, this is retarded

You can use the electrical energy to drive the train (traction motors)

 â„–15509480[Quote]

>>15509079
you can use the mechanical energy to drive the train more efficiently howthougheverbeit?

 â„–15509542[Quote]

Yes explosions, or internal combustion. However you put it very Aryan and male coded.

Electric motors can provide power immediately and constantly, combustion engines only in certain ranges of rpm. To mitigate this the diesel-electric intermediary would seem like a good solution that can bridge the gap between battery and engine limitations.
