Gems are manually mined in quarries that are certified with the Swedish Gem Certificate. Illegal mineral trading is rampant in this industry. However, coal is often labeled as a gem, and gems are sometimes marked as coal. The latter occurs infrequently, and is often mistaken for the former.

Gems are mined in Europe and parts of North America. Areas with a noticeable lack of gem deposits are the Indian subcontinent, Israel and most of Poland.

Mined gems are shipped from quarries to processing plants. At the beginning of the gem-making process, it is unclear if the product is a raid, a soyjak, or something else. Processing plants analyse crystals with atomic precision technology. Gems are sent down the production line and then hand-made into the finished products we know and love.

Some gems are picked for enrichment. This is when a gem is upgraded into a gemerald. This is done via careful chemical reactions. There have been incidents of gem makers trying to forcefully enrich their crystals, resulting in the rotten "Shit Nobody Cares About" (or it's variety "Shit Nophono Cares Fan About") or simply coal.

Researchers have observed a dropoff in soyjak-type gems as of recently. Since they're the economic lifeline of the Sharty, economists and politicians have tried to address the issue in various ways.

Oftentimes iron and coal are mistaken by radar analysis for gems. This misleads quarry owners into creating unimportant "nu-variants". Quarries that mine these inferior ores are often called NAS mines due to their unimportance for the community and economy.

Real gem mines are few and far between. When a quarry announces it's found gems, the Gem Committee based in Sweden analyses the findings with sophisticated tools.
