burn wood in low oxygen enviroment, can be in somewhere like a barrel or how some africans do it which is by making a giant pile and putting clay on top and then lightning on fire and letting it burn from the inside occasionally making some holes and opening up the giant clay sphere after a few days. you can also make coke coal in a similar fashion but that needs to be a mineral coal and both are used industrially due to producing less smoke and burning hotter, but coke burns hottest so its used by foundries. today it costs more to make charcoal yourself than to buy industrial one since even jeety charcoal is gooder for a project than trying to make some yourself using pricey wood
