The Namibian politician is named Adolf Hitler Uunona because his father named him after the German Nazi leader, likely without fully understanding his ideology or historical significance. Namibia was a former German colony, so German names are not uncommon there.
Parental Choice and Lack of Information: In interviews, Adolf Hitler Uunona explained that his father "probably didn't understand what Adolf Hitler stood for" when he gave him the name. At the time of his birth, it was just a "perfectly normal name".
Growing up with the Name: Uunona stated that it wasn't until he was older that he realized the historical weight of the name and the atrocities associated with the Nazi leader who "wanted to subjugate the whole world".
No Association with Nazi Ideology: Uunona firmly distances himself from any Nazi ideology, stressing, "I have nothing to do with any of these things". He is known locally as an anti-apartheid activist and civil rights fighter.
Context of German Names in Namibia: The prevalence of German names (such as Adolf, Heinrich, Hans) in Namibia stems from its history as a German colony, known as German South West Africa, from 1884 to 1915. There is still a German-speaking community, German road names, and other German cultural influences in the country today.
Current Usage: Uunona typically goes by Adolf Uunona in public and his wife calls him Adolf to shed some of the name's weight. He hasn't changed it officially because it is on all his official documents and he feels it is too late to do so.
