Episode 1 is definitely unique in its atmosphere. The question of Beatrice "existing" really helps develop a sense of dread towards the end. The next episode is where I'd say the "true" game begins. You'll see how far Battler's stubbornness gets him.
Also, I'm assuming you went with the MangaGamer version for the first episode? I'll admit that the default sprites in that version are extremely stupid. The console sprites (on the right) are more relaxed when it comes to that while not looking as derpy as the original sprites so you may be interested in them. Besides that, I think the console port's voice acting adds a lot to the characters. I can't think of the characters without thinking about their voice actors aswell.

My review of episode 2. I assumed battler would win in his match with Beatrice, but I was wrong and unfortunately ended up humiliated by her. Despite his defeat and humiliation, he still had some courage to challenge beatrice during her torture session with rosa. Similar to how shannon stood up to beatrice and pissed her off and her dying quickly along with george. I like the way how bernkastel’s eyes look “lifeless” in this version, sort of representing what she went through.
Overall I enjoyed it despite it being longer than the first episode.

07th Expansion is a group dedicated to making visual novels. What's usually posted the most on the sherdee are their VNs in the When They Cry series (Higurashi, Umineko, and Ciconia), they focus mostly on mystery, horror, and thriller. They're quite long each. I personally love them for their unique atmosphere and intricate characters writing so it's something I'd definitely recommend. You could technically read them in any order, but I'd recommend starting with Higurashi first since it explains the nature of some certain characters in Umineko.

Basically it could have been a neat grounded story with a bit of a surreal tone, but it shits the bed by becoming dumb and convoluted
