On the morning of October 2nd in Manchester in the North of England, 35-year-old Syrian migrant Jihad al-Shami rammed a vehicle into pedestrians outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall during Yom Kippur worship services, which is the holiest day in Judaism. al-Shami proceeded to exit the vehicle and stab bystanders, including a security guard.
Greater Manchester Police arrived on the scene in minutes, fatally shooting al-Shami. A bystander was killed in the crossfire along with another who was injured. Though it is unclear which victim was accidentally killed by police gunfire, the two victims were 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz. Three survivors were hospitalized with non-life-threating injuries.
The terrorist attack is now under investigation by British counter-terrorism authorities, and have arrested three individuals on suspicion of association.
The attack has also exacerbated the ongoing political turmoil in the UK in regards to protests over mass immigration and the rise of right-wing populism.
