Same. And I am ashamed by this. Especially considering how some SEA countries are developing and becoming relevant and we have good relations with Indonesia. All I know about Indonesian history is that there was once a Javanese ruler who wanted to be annexed by the Ottoman empire but we refused them because it was too far away and it would be impossible to protect them.
Studying late-ottoman Turkish history is always so infuriating. We literally missed out on EVERYTHING. How can a country go from being the most dominant military force in the world to complete irrelevancy purely by stupidity? Ugh…

In all fairness they were. Transporting resources from Yemen to Aceh would taken a long time and in case of a war with the Portuguese, they would had cut these supplylines and disconect them without much problem.

Aditionally let's say the Ottomans took the role of "Calif" more seriously they would had needed to establish a network of alliances and maritimate dominance over the Indian sea, and the Sultan was more focused on securing mediterranean dominance at the time as they gaveup on asia after many wars against the Persians without much advances.

Also is important to take into consideration that in order to have a strong dominance in the Indian sea they would first needed to secure the red sea, however the relationship between the Ottomans and their Arab subjects was not particularly good. Specially with the Yemeni.

Oh my god… I don't even wanna hear that I'm sorry. It's just depressing to study these parts of our history. How we used to be a great power. So fucking depressing. When I studied the history of the ottoman empire I only studied the earlier parts because the later parts would always make me sad.
