It's not bad. But it's not great. Ergo Proxy is more style and presentation over meaningful substance. The first time one sees it, it seems better (and more sophisticated) than it actually is. And when it first aired in 2006 it was a pleasant surprise as nearly all new animes since ~2 years earlier had been crap. That made Ergo Proxy get a bit overrated. It was significantly better than nearly everything else that had come out over the last few years. It was like "wow wtf this DOESN'T suck, and it seems quite interesting". Basically everything else was so bad that Ergo Proxy felt more amazing than it would've if it'd aired in lets say 2003. Of course new animes kept being crap and even got worse, so Ergo Proxy is - despite being overrated and not being great - much better than nearly everything made since.
