They characters will speak different dialects and even different languages like Russian when it comes up instead of just dubbing it or putting on an accent.
They also cover not just the conflict between the Yayoi Yamato (Modern Japanese) and native Jomon Ainu but also Russian, Tatar, and Polish characters and history (Alexander II/People's Will/Narodnaya Volya, Russo-Japanese war, Karafuto/Sakhalin island, etc.)
They also touch on other Native minorities you hardly ever see like Koito who's Hayato and genetically similar to Pacific Austronesians
Not to mention the time period in general is great because it's on the cusp of WW1 so Japan is still an empire but has a bunch of technology and shit like the Maxim the first fully automatic machine gun.
The show is genuinely like getting the best head you've ever gotten if you're a military history fag.
(It's also one of the few accurate depictions of of functional, intelligent, relatable, and likeable psychopaths and sociopaths that doesn't just make them retarded murderers)
((Also also they never treat the ainu girl Asirpa (or any other minor) sexuallly or weird and the only fanservicey stuff is of the guys played for gags))
