Touhou is a Japanese doujin game series of 2D (usually with 3D backgrounds) vertically scrolling shooting games. It's gotten big enough that they also create related manga, light novels, and music.
It mainly takes place in Gensokyo, which is akin to a fantastical version of Kamakura-era Japan that was separated from the outside world with a barrier. You play as Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, who manages this barrier and deals with dangerous spirits and other creatures that interrupt the status quo.
