I had a filipino friend in middle school who was OBSESSED with these light novels (this was before the anime came out)
I read the first one at his recommendation and he literally opens it up talking about how he got kicked out of his parents house for jacking off to loli 'p

It's a redemption story or something

Its retarded though
He's only able to redeem himself because he's attractive and has magic powers
It essentially tells the viewer that unless you're extraordinary and are capable of things no other person is capable of you are unable to change
He never took any initiative and never faced any consequences for his 30+ years of sloth he just got a new chance (where he was automatically destined to succeed) and unsurprisingly succeeded

It’s unfortunately very realistic in that regard. Most people are a product of their circumstances. Even if they can change, chances are that they’re too demoralized to do so and drown themselves in goy slop and circuses to numb the pain.

I completely forgot his future self went back in time to visit him
I have a feeling they will fuck up this interaction entirely in the anime

I find isekai fascinating because of the reoccurring theme of reincarnation. I couldn’t seem to find the cultural roots of this concept at first. The reincarnation in isekai isn’t present in modern Shintoism or Buddhism. Reincarnation in Buddhism is actually not a thing. When you die, in Buddhism you’re actually dead for good. It’s only your karma that lives on, not your soul, yet every time reincarnation is depicted in media, it’s the whole soul that inherits a new body. I poked around this with a chatbot, and it basically said most cultures around the world believed that their children were their ancestors. Weird stuff.

It's hopecore for people who aren't white. That one day when they die they too will ascend into greatness.
