In the quote I left out "watching a few shows" THOUGH because one didn't just watch a few great shows then remained content with that, and gave up on anime just because new anime sucked, but rather one tried to see as many good animes as one could find – and with new anime going downhill one was left with no other choice but to search more and more through the stuff that'd been made in the decades prior, which became a lot easier to do thanks to anidb.
