In my limited understanding, the way you do magic is focusing your energy/harnessing freeflowing energy or borrowing energy from a deity and using your body/tools/ritual to transmute it into something you want. Since the world is made of energy in different forms and states, by manipulating energy you can manipulate reality itself. Meditation is important because it is exercising your mental muscles. If you wanted to lift a big rock you would go to the gym and lift big, so if you want to become a magician and manipulate large quantities of energy you need to meditate hard.
