I had a friend in school who said he could induce lucid dreaming by making it a habit to count the fingers on his hand every thirty seconds while awake. After a while it became so impuslive (at least according to him) that he started doing it in his dreams, in which you always have uneven/wierd amounts of fingers. That made him aware, but he said he started getting sleep paralysis too. Although I'm unsure if that had to do with the high amounts of lucid dreaming he was said to have.

I recollect having a semi-lucid dream where I started to suspect I was dreaming and counted my fingers, this actaully led me to having clunky control of the dream but I somehow lost it and forgot it after a while. So it kind of works.
