They think by torturing themselves in this life and scorning physicality they will earn the reward of being able to do what they want forever, "Do what thou will". Gnostics want to be Rick Sanchez, a narcissistic r*dditor so complete he walled himself off from all realities where he wasn't the smartest man in existence. The nature of the Outer Darkness is even more grim because those that have chosen to separate from God and Creation are given what they want: escape into what lies outside of reality. They get to then *try* to construct a new reality out of their own imagination and innate nature. Of course, being internally empty, reflexive, and selfish they end up becoming the worst of Demiurges, creating worlds of suffering for their entertainment and consumption. The entire reality that they create becomes an extension of their neurosis, endlessly consuming and torturing themselves. There's no longer God or meds to break them out of it.
