I think the point was that the warp zones are the level select. If you go to them first thing you'll think the game is unfair because of the difficulty spike but if you play the worlds in order then you understand when your ready to use them.

Super Mario Bros 3 is presented as a stage play. The game begins with a curtain rising. The environment has shadows against the backdrop. Objects are bolted to the background. You're watching a play. But this design choice is NEVER mentioned in the game - at no point are you told that this is a stage play. Why?

I never understood the appeal of Super Mario World. Sure it was the big SNES launch title and the game that introduced Yoshi but besides that it's mid as fuck compared to Mario 3 and the Mario games which came after.
>Most levels are sameish and look like they were designed with Mario Maker
>No new power-ups besides the cape (super leaf which makes the game trivial by running at the start of the level and flying to the end)
>Little to no world theming (the only world with a theme being Forest of Illusion which sucks anyways)
>Backgrounds are flat and boring to look at, graphics in general look from an early PC Engine game instead of a SNES one compared to other early SNES games like Castlevania IV and A Link to the Past
>Mario feels like Luigi in the Mario games after, he is too slippery and while the game controls fairly well there are not many new movement options apart from kicking items upwards and the spin jump, both being very situational
>The open world map is a good addition but adds nothing to the core gameplay
>Yoshi is only there for you to take an extra hit and maybe get a couple of secret exits
>The music is also good but the tracks you will be hearing the most are all remixes of the overworld theme (the credits and bowser's theme are really good doe)
>Secret exits are a good concept but there's too many of them, lead to nothing most times and I just don't want to play the same level two times to clear it both ways
>Bosses are also mid I guess but that can also be said about most Mario bosses anyways

I mean it's not a bad game at all but I don't find it to be the masterpiece millennials who probably played it as their first game (or first SNES game at least) say it is, same applies to zoomer nostalgiafags who watched kaizo romhacks or japanese automatic mario videos in the 2000's. Specially when in the same series you have Mario 3, Mario Wonder and the 3D games and in the same console you have the Donkey Kong Country trilogy and Yoshi's Island, all better games than Mario World.
