Portal 1 was arguably reddit too, remember all the "teh caek is a lie!!1" memes being everywhere in the late 2000s-early 2010s

True. What's interesting is how 4/v/ mainly shrugged Portal 1 off and mocked it's fans, but when Portal 2 released, Redditors set up shop and never left. They unironically made "SPAAAAACCCCCCEEEEE", "lemons", "potato" and other meme threads. There were a lot of iJustine threads, mocking how much of an idiot she was/is and whether or not she was faking it for attention, but those threads were massively outnumbered and something Reddit could get in on as well because it was eceleb drama. Make no mistake, modern 4/v/ is straight up Reddit and has been for over a decade. The constant politics, porn, and hatred of how imageboards naturally slide off slow, unfavorable threads really exposes them.

All of that was just regular internet humor in the 2000s and early 2010s, before it got ruined by rick and morty

This, it was just the humor of the time

If you think this is a Reddit game you should see High on Life

Yes, illegal guerilla marketing also happens. Especially on Rapape's 4chan.

If borderlands 2 predates it then no

Portal 2 came out about a year and a half before it. It was the game that broke 4/v/, then Borderlands 2 made Reddit truly feel at home there. People there are genuinely nostalgic for Borderlands 2, while not knowing that back when it released, the last of old/v/ was mocking it constantly. The final effective defenses moved out by 2015. And it's been a Reddit colony that has since spread to literally every board. Yes, even (especially) /a/, and /g/ and /jp/.

no because Half-Life 2 was the first reddit game. their sequels are always based on the meme version of their game rather than the actual game.

portal was instantly redditified by the culture around it, but the game itself was not that way. the presentation was unwelcoming and cold. when you find "the cake is a lie" scrawled on the walls it's in a depressing dirty back corner that someone lost his mind in. the silly phrase is funny only because of the massive contrast.
