I think you'll have the least trouble with an AMD GPU. Any X11 environment, KDE Plasma Wayland, a wlroots based compositor is up to you and a matter of personal preference. You can't use GNOME though

the steam frame when it comes out. not only itll be the best vr headset, but will fs have the best compatibility with linux.

if you cant wait or dont want to spend too much money, the quest 2/3/3a are ok with linux when using virtual desktop and specially steam link.
alvr via usb might work but ive never used it.
