It's a system manager used to start and stop services. Previously that was done with an assortment of text file init scripts that have the issue of one typo bricking entire system among other issues inherent to text files. I don't get the hate for systemd, it's an obvious improvement. Most of the hate posting is weird screeching without any substance. I think the haters are simply mentally ill.
