I spent every waking minute of free time for literal months designing and programming a digital synth and it still sounds like absolute shit, not because of the implementation but because the ideas were stupid.
Should I fixate on it autistically until it does sound good or just cut my losses?

FIXATE!

how does it work?

Its a 6 operator phase modulated synth, inspired largely by the Yamaha DX7 of the 80s. How it works is basically that each operator generates a sine, square or custom wave form. These are divided internally into carriers (the oscillator that sends its sine wave to your speakers) and modulators, which use their sine wave to modify the carriers.
In Phase Modulation, the frequency of the Carrier remains perfectly constant. Instead, the amplitude of the Modulator pushes and pulls the position (phase) of the Carrier's waveform back and forth along the timeline.

I got the idea from Curtis Roads' 'Computer Music Tutorial'. However I made some modifications to the design so that it could be more than just a dx7 clone. I implemented a lot of logarithmic scales to map parameters. I implemented reverb and chorus. And I also added a second modulation source to the carriers. The reverb itself is now also a modulation source. This is a unique invention of mine. The idea was to be able to simulate in FM synthesis the resonant behavior of string instruments in relation to strong reverb.

If anyone wants a free vst let me know and I will let you demo the prototype once its ready. I will not be making it open source because I am a SLF nophono

DSP is a DNB field to develop in.
When you add something and it doesnt work you dont know if the problem is phase cancelation or stupid retarded code until you spend the next few hours debugging.

>In Debug mode, the compiler deliberately turns off all optimizations, inserts thousands of safety checks, and refuses to inline functions. Changing to a Release build will instantly make your plugin 10x to 20x faster.
Want to guess who has been unknowingly compiling in debug mode for the past 3 weeks and wondering why it has been so slow?

Sorry for the bad playing, I make instruments because I cannot play them. Anyway, I am considering turning one or two of these into midi demos. Which is your favourite?

op keep on working try to sell it to a vst company in exchange for a job

I want you to try out my synth, I will send it to you for free if you reply to this message.
I want you to tell me about your thoughts on the layout and the preset system, I want you to tell me if you like the sound, and I want you to contribute and share your patches using the built in patch import and export system

Fiiiine. Only after I fix this bug. For some reason, the amplitude spikes a little bit out of nowhere when a note is held down and I cannot for the life of me find what the cause is. It appears to be a very sticky bug.
