Hey fags I want to make a homeserver. I've got to ask a few things: Are there any benefits or downsides to building a RasPI 5 NAS with some heads for sata or m.2? Would it break too much and be too unreliable to work as storage for backs ups or a cloud? If I cared about my security and privacy should I have one machine for mobile cloud storage and another for file storage? I'm thinking of using a Linux for pi and Open Media Vault but I could do a Raspberry Pi os too. I know I can buy an NAS on amazon but idk I just don't trust that prebuilt shit on amazon irrationally; worried that its overpriced or got zoggedware in it by default somehow but idrc, If a Raspberry PI can't be reliable would a used Laptop be better? Would I be able to even have one with more than a single drive on the laptop? I'd probably use a cooling pad for the laptop if I went that route. Can I have a reliable network with dinkier home assembled hardware or should I just buy some dumb amazon NAS, also how secure would they all be from malware, that's actually a big one now that I think about it bc of how much peer to peer archiving of legacy media that I've done on this machine.

I have a whole disasembled computer that I can turn into an NAS if I really want to but I'd rather pawn that off for like 900-1300 dollars and make use of something that doesnt need nearly as much power, so I could either get an NAS on amazon or I could learn what the fucks even in an NAS by building one myself considering how little I even use icloud and my trusty 0 backups that I keep for my technology; also a pi has 2ghz, some got 2.5 cat and 8 gigs of ram the fuck more do I need its probably gonna have better speeds than my wifi that Im running right now whats the bottleneck?? Reddits more useful than you are you useless fucking seabed crawling trilobite, I'd be better off getting a NUC it looks like just because jerryrigging a jewensteined Rpi would cost the same as a nuc
