Hey fags I want to make a homeserver. I've got to ask a few things: Are there any benefits or downsides to building a RasPI 5 NAS with some heads for sata or m.2? Would it break too much and be too unreliable to work as storage for backs ups or a cloud? If I cared about my security and privacy should I have one machine for mobile cloud storage and another for file storage? I'm thinking of using a Linux for pi and Open Media Vault but I could do a Raspberry Pi os too. I know I can buy an NAS on amazon but idk I just don't trust that prebuilt shit on amazon irrationally; worried that its overpriced or got zoggedware in it by default somehow but idrc, If a Raspberry PI can't be reliable would a used Laptop be better? Would I be able to even have one with more than a single drive on the laptop? I'd probably use a cooling pad for the laptop if I went that route. Can I have a reliable network with dinkier home assembled hardware or should I just buy some dumb amazon NAS, also how secure would they all be from malware, that's actually a big one now that I think about it bc of how much peer to peer archiving of legacy media that I've done on this machine.
