>gif
bloated and mainly not enough colours
>webp
broken as fuck, but it's what i use here when i need more colours
>apng
low support and still filesize thick, but would be cool if it catched on
>avif
slow as fuck, av1 should stick to videos, but at least it's well supported
>jpeg-xl
feels like the most idealistic option, but it's kinda complex software-wise (not easiest on implementation) and thus it's hard to spread

there actually isnt a single best format for animated images. just pick one which is the best for your usecase
also how is webp broken?

 â„–25067[Quote]

>>25060
i'd like the formats to have some unification. currently gif is the most popular and if i could choose, i'd have jfx as an universal, but i'd be fine with apng
>also how is webp broken?
other than CVE-2023-4863, it apparently fucks up imageboard softwares (i'd rather not link the source), on sharty when uploading webp it's degraded not by compression but by bad implementation and its benefits are overshadowed by avif or jfx

 â„–25078[Quote]

>>25051 (OP)
That's the neat part. We have literally nothing.
What should have replaced animated image format was jpeg-xl, which was supposed to be the true successor to jpeg, png, gif…
>kinda complex software-wise (not easiest on implementation) and thus it's hard to spread
No not really. It's actually simpler to decode than avif. Google killed it in 2023 (removed support from chrome), because they are developing webp-2 which won't actually be an image format, rather a playground for image compression, but no format standart like webp.
tldr: we are fucked, nothing ever happens, you WILL use webp because google said so

gif as a format should have not lasted as long as it did

why are techniggers so obssessed with image formats?

 â„–25134[Quote]

>>25128
because there's no good one size fits all format
if there was we'd just use that and shut up

 â„–25137[Quote]

>>25128
compression is absolutely fascinating and very important

 â„–25211[Quote]

>>25078
complex i didn't mean calculation-wise, but on implemention. according to mozilla, the decoder is too "wide" and they're afraid of security implications, which is understandable i guess
>Google killed it in 2023 because they are developing webp-2
why even? i assumed their interest in researching codecs was in saving space on their own servers while not having to pay royalty fees. jpeg-xl would benefit them
>>25137
tsmt. i'm just autistic about compression

 â„–25247[Quote]

>>25211
Nevermind. 4 days ago, they actually released a nightly version of chrome where the support for jpeg xl has been brought back geg.

Dead honest, I am as confused as you are. Only what can I guess is internal politics, and the fact that jpeg-xl directly competes with googles own format, webp. But idk.

that's nice to hear. after chrome adopts it mainstream, firefox shouldn't take long after, quote will implement it in Nusoi and i can export all my jaks in jxl to save 5 kb
