ive owned a lot of these boomer drives, clicks don't necessarily mean its dying
its more suspicious if the drive was never making a clicking noise and then began to do it years later

OP here. Now my external HDD is making more clicking noises and poorly responding. I'm fucking scared. I've had this HDD for at least 4 years. Western Digital drive if that matters. This didn't happen at its younger years.

I even heard a few beeping tones when the drive was connected.

Weirdly when plugged into another PC (I didn't access the files), it didn't make any noises. But for safety reasons I will make a backup. I'm a retard who didn't do 3-2-1 backup regularly.

if its seagate they have a tool to test drive health, im sure that western digital has something similar.
install this
https://www.hdtune.com/download.htmldo a full scan and it will pick up any bad sectors. also defragmenting would probably help with speed. worse case scenario back up now

If a spinning drive is making soft ticking/clicking sounds when actively reading and writing, it's fine.
