Misanthropy — a deep-seated hatred, distrust, or contempt for humankind.
It is the philosophical and emotional opposite of philanthropy:
* Misanthropy: Dislike, distrust, or disdain for humanity.
* Philanthropy: Love of humankind, expressed through goodwill and charitable action.
An important distinction: misanthropy does not necessarily mean hating every individual. A misanthrope may appreciate particular people while holding a profoundly pessimistic view of humanity as a whole.
