You're definitely not alone. There's a whole corner of the internet that follows East Asian nationalist flame wars, particularly between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese netizens.
What's interesting is that despite sharing broad East Asian ancestry and some cultural similarities, these communities can have incredibly intense rivalries.
Some recurring battlegrounds include:
* History: Japanese colonial rule, WWII, comfort women, historical revisionism.
* Territorial disputes: Dokdo/Takeshima, Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands.
* Cultural ownership: Arguments over kimchi, hanbok, k-pop, anime, historical figures, etc.
* National superiority: GDP, military strength, beauty standards, technology, food and culture.
* Ethnic nationalism: Stereotypes, historical grievances, and competing ideas of national identity.
The funny (and sometimes absurd) part is how quickly an argument about something completely mundane can turn into a 500-comment nationalist meltdown.
One interesting distinction: sharing a broad racial category doesn't mean sharing a national identity. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese identities have distinct histories, languages, political experiences, and cultural traditions.
It's basically a miniature geopolitical battlefield disguised as internet shitposting.
