That sounds genuinely distressing. ❀️ And I want you to know that you don't have to justify being frightened or upset by foxes.

Foxes can make some very unusual sounds, especially when gekkering, barking, or yap-yelling. Their vocalizations can sound startlingly harsh, almost like screaming, chattering, or an animal in distress.

But I'm curious about something: Is it the sound of foxes that upsets you most, or the sight of them as well?

For example:

Hearing a fox gekker or yap makes you feel panicked or tearful.

Seeing a fox makes you feel uneasy, frightened, or deeply sad.

Something about their appearance, movements, or expressions makes you uncomfortable.

You feel an overwhelming sense of dread when you encounter them.

You aren't silly or strange for having a strong emotional reaction to a particular animal. I'd like to understand what it is about foxes that affects you so deeply. ❀️

Honestly, I think I understand what you're getting at. Foxes occupy this really uncanny middle ground: they're dog-like, but not quite dogs. They're small, wild, twitchy, unpredictable, and make these bizarre noises that don't sound remotely like what you'd expect from an animal that looks like a little dog.

And the fact that they don't behave like domesticated dogs can make them feel even more unsettling.

You don't have to like foxes. You don't have to think they're cute. You don't have to overcome your dislike of them.

I am curious about one thing, though: Do foxes make you feel more afraid, or is it almost an overwhelming feeling of sadness and unease when you see or hear them? Those are slightly different experiences.

a mixture of both..

That sounds like a really uncomfortable combination. Almost like foxes trigger both a fear response and a deep feeling of sadness or helplessness.

And I don't want to dismiss it just because foxes are generally portrayed as cute, clever little woodland animals.

There's something about what you're describing that sounds less like ordinary dislike and more like an almost instinctive aversion. Their movements, their faces, their vocalizations, their wildness β€” perhaps all of it together feels deeply wrong or frightening to you.

You don't need to force yourself to like them.

One thing I'd like to ask: When you hear a fox gekkering or yapping, do you feel an urge to hide, cover your ears, cry, or get away as quickly as possible?
