He's not wrong, the background check to become a cop is pretty intense, they look into pretty much everything in your life that has any kind of trail. They absolutely do interview your family/friends/neighbors about you
At the same time it's not really very "selective" as long as you don't have obvious red flags like affiliations with gangs or extremist groups. Wrangling armed retards on drugs is not a job that attracts the cream of society
