My source? Myself. I'm nearly 35 and used 4chan for 15 years, since I was about 18. I watched the website not only NOT grow more mature in its behavior, but it actually became significantly more immature. In 2011 the average user age on 4chan was probably around 19-23 (accounting for somewhat better education back then), with many people making 1-2 paragraph posts that were clearly worded like post-high school students. And I'm not just talking about opening posts, it used to be common to read threads that had multiple people going back and forth using paragraphs instead of the 1-3 sentences of emotionally driven, borderline gibberish. A ton of users were still insufferable back then (mostly weebs internally raging while failing to put off an air of calm superiority), they were just better at putting words down.
