Medical care is linked to better mental health.
Tordoff et al., JAMA Network Open (2022), tracked 104 trans and nonbinary youths aged 13 to 20. Those who received hormones or puberty blockers had 60% lower odds of depression and 73% lower odds of self-harm or suicidal thoughts over 12 months.
Puberty suppression followed by hormones leads to good outcomes in adulthood.
De Vries et al., Pediatrics (2014), assessed 55 Dutch young adults three times. Their wellbeing was similar to or better than that of same-age peers in the general population.
