because the cults take advantage of the weaknesses of the people they are trying to conform into it by grooming them, using their trauma to manipulate them, getting their onther family members who are part of the cult to try and get them to join the cult, and various other means i can't be bothered to think of, because cults tend to do alot of heinous shit
