All polling stations in Israeli election have closed, Central Elections Committee says

Reporting from Tel Aviv

All the polling stations in Israel's election have closed, the Central Elections Committee spokesperson's office said in a statement.

"The Central Elections Committee announces that all polling stations in the elections to the 26th Knesset have closed. The process now moves to vote counting, results processing and verification. Election integrity monitoring was in place at all polling stations throughout voting hours," the committee said in the statement.

An exit poll by Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 shows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc on track to win 50 seats and rival Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc 52 seats.

"Following the close of voting at each polling station, the polling station committee will count the ballot slips 'by hand' and enter the results in the official record. These records and the ballot materials will be transferred to the regional election committees. Results will be entered into the Committee’s systems and undergo checks and verification," the committee said in the statement.

"Election results will be published progressively on the Central Elections Committee’s website as counting and data processing advance. Figures published during the count are partial and subject to change," the committee added.

Initial exit poll results show lack of confidence in Netanyahu, rival Eisenkot says

The initial exit poll results show a lack of confidence in Netanyahu, his main rival Eisenkot said in a post on X.

“The initial exit poll results indicate a complete lack of confidence in Netanyahu and the October 7 government among the Zionist majority and the majority of Israeli citizens,” Eisenkot wrote. “If these are the final results, this is a victory for Israel’s mainstream Zionist majority.”

An exit poll by Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 shows Netanyahu’s bloc on track to win 50 seats and rival Eisenkot’s bloc 52 seats. The data from broadcasters provide some of the first indication of the outcome from election day, but they are not official results.

While the preliminary results are expected later today or tomorrow, it is required that the official results are published within eight days of the vote.

It is, however, highly unlikely that one party will earn a Knesset majority as that has never happened in Israel's history. As a result negotiations will likely have to take place to form a ruling coalition.

Days and weeks of horse trading have taken place after past elections as the parties try to form a government which at least 61 members claim allegiance to. As a result, some smaller parties have previously had outsized influence over their majority partners.

Around a week after the official results are published, President Isaac Herzog will task a member of the Knesset with forming a government. Giving the mandate to the leader of the largest party is customary but not a legal requirement and someone else can be chosen if they're considered to have a better chance of forming a coalition.

This member then has seven weeks to form a coalition. Should they fail, another member may be appointed, but if things remain gridlocked Herzog can dissolve the parliament and hold new elections within 90 days.

Israelis went to the polls five times between 2019 and 2022.
