like the format of imageboards themselves or like if 4chan never existed? because i could imagine 4chan still being made if imageboards were never conceived.
I don't think this site would still exist if 4chan was never made. The internet would also be very different without 4chan.
If you just mean the imageboard format itself existing, then its possible nothing could change. Lets say the imageboard format never made it past gazou or whatever it was called, 2chan probably would've stayed a textboard, which would still lead to 4chan being made. Seeing how 4chan was able to implement media in replies (something base futaba didn't have) i imagine they would've found a way to implement inline images or something.
nothing would be that different outside of 4chan using textboard software. maybe 4chan would have slightly different memes.
