It doesn't have to be big as the smaller it is the more control you'll have and the less detail you'll need fill. You could use a reference such as a picture or a manga panel, but the most important of these is to draw it proportionally from perspective and anatomy. Allow yourself to keep drawing even if you mess up, you can draw another one after you've finished the flawed one. With this you'll constantly smooth out any rough imperfections with each push towards refinement on your own object.
