In Book I (1.15), he listed "shields and many other kinds of fires" (clipei quoque et alia complura ignium genera), while in Book VII (20.2) he referred to clipei ardentes or clipei flagrantes ("burning" or "flaming shields") as celestial phenomena worthy of natural investigation.
