In July 2006, a mass murder occurred at the Tiewa Temple in Hanyin County, Shaanxi Province. The perpetrator, Qiu Xinghua, harbored a grudge after a dispute with temple staff over moving a stone tablet and suspected the temple abbot of molesting his wife.
On the night of July 14, 2006, Qiu waited until everyone was asleep, then used a machete and axe to attack the heads of 10 people—including temple staff and pilgrims—killing all of them. The victims included a 12-year-old child. Afterwards, he desecrated the abbot's body, wrote threatening messages in blood, and set fire to the temple before fleeing.
While on the run, he killed one more person and injured two others during a robbery in Hubei Province. He was arrested on August 19, 2006, sentenced to death, and executed on December 28, 2006.
