The Sharty is fundamentally a free-market system. Every user who arrives does so voluntarily and exchanges the only scarce resources that matter here—time, attention, and posts.

Those who produce “gemmy” threads are simply entrepreneurs meeting consumer demand. They supply humor, insight, shared references, or technical skill that other participants value enough to engage with, reply to, archive, or build upon. The market signals success immediately and without coercion.

Bait threads and “coal,” by contrast, are products that either fail the market test outright or succeed only by extracting low-value engagement. In a functioning market they are slid away, starved of attention, and replaced by better offerings. No central authority needs to declare them inferior; the revealed preferences of the users do that work far more efficiently.

Administrator Salt’s proper role is correspondingly narrow. He is the residual claimant who owns the property and must keep the servers running and the site legally viable. Beyond those strictly necessary functions—preventing technical collapse or external legal destruction—any further intervention converts a spontaneous order into a bureaucracy.

Bureaucracy does not produce more gems. It produces rule-cucking: higher barriers to entry, distorted incentives, and fewer of the very posts that users demonstrably value. The cure for low-quality content is never thicker rules; it is lower friction and clearer residual claimancy so that successful posters capture the reputational returns of their work.
