Their competition is/was Epic games who was constantly giving away free games as a promotion. Steam simply has the mature ecosystem and user interface though. Nothing else really approaches it.

steam fucking sucks because it's closed source garbage and they will conform with id checks soon enough

Horribly bloated slow shitty ui storefront and worse sales, the free game promotion was not a great idea because most people just installed the storefront to get the free games and used it for nothing else.
The steam ui isn't bad but it's bloated and can be slow at times, and steam is also a whole platform with a discussion forum, mod communities, and acts as a primitive social media.
